Community Outreach Housing Support
At DYS, we know that 3 out of 5 youth experiencing homelessness are the “hidden homeless”. They are couch-surfing at a friend’s home, staying for as long as they can, while continuing the search for greater stability. They are in a housing crisis, they need help, but because they may never identify as “homeless”, they aren’t searching for homelessness supports. Our Community Outreach Housing Support program meets youth “where they are at” – literally. Working in schools, libraries, community centres, hubs, parks, etc., they offer immediate housing support to youth in need, while building the capacity of educators and other “meaningful adults” to have greater confidence and competence to identify youth in need and to respond in a meaningful, trauma-informed way.
