Shelter Diversion

We know that even one night spent on the street or in a shelter increases a youth’s risk of chronic homelessness exponentially. That is why every youth who calls Joanne’s House for a shelter bed works with our team to explore every safe alternative before entering the shelter system. Our “shelter diversion” model is never about turning away individuals in need, it is about helping youth find safe, immediate housing while we continue to support them in seeking long-term solutions.

All of our programs are voluntary and our guiding principle of “youth choice, youth voice and self-determination” drives our need to speak directly to the young person when exploring their housing options or shelter intake.

A young person can self-refer.  Community members wanting to refer someone to DYS should encourage the youth to call us directly.
